Generally speaking, drivers are hit for long shots off the tee. While depending on the yardage most people will hit a 3 wood , 5 wood or hybrid when in the fairway far enough away from the hole that they cant reach it.

for this it depends on the situation and the player... off of the tee most players use a driver, from long distance fairway positions or mild rough positions players will use anything from a 3wood to an iron depending on the distance and the lie. your best bet is to figure out how far you hit each club on average and use that to determine your club selection in your round
