Ping Pong or Table Tennis started in England towards the end of the 19th century around the 1880's when, after a evening meal some Victorians decided to turn their dining room tables into miniature versions of the traditional tennis playing field. many different every-day objects were used in constructing the sport. They used a line of books as the net and rackets were lids from empty cigar boxes. When the game first started it was called many different names. "Whif whaf," "gossamer," and "flim flam" were commonly used to describe it.

The game has its origins in England as an after-dinner amusement for upper-class Victorians in the 1880s. Mimicking the game of tennis in an indoor environment, everyday objects were originally enlisted to act as the equipment. A line of books would be the net, a rounded top of a Champagne cork or knot of string as the ball, and a cigar box lid as the racket. Pulled answer from Wikipedia.

It can be played by anyone who can hold a racket, including people in wheelchairs. In the United States, there is a collegiate circuit which is organized by the National Collegiate Athletics Association.
