The area upon with a bowler stands is called the approach. In most houses it is separated from the Bowling circle, either by being raised, or by being cleared marked as separate.

It is an area that allows the bowler free movement to being their delivery progression.

Where to stand takes a bit of trial and error. If you are just beginning, trying just standing in the middle dot on the approach and aiming and the third arrow (one to the left of the middle if you are lefty, to the right if righty).

See where the ball hits the pins and then move yourself and where you are aiming until the ball hits the "pocket".

As you advance your game, your standing and aiming position will change based on lane conditions and the ball you are using.
