The term "links" dates back to the birth of Golf itself on the shores of Scotland. It refers to a specific type of coastal golf course and its unique style of play. Golf was first played on the sandy stretches of land that linked the Scottish sea coasts to the fertile agricultural plains located inland. Too sandy to be farmed, this "linksland" was ideal for golf.
The term has become synonymous with golf courses in general. A course might refer to itself as a "golf links" even though it shares none of the classic characteristics of a links.
A links course is where a golf course has been built on the land which 'links' the sea to the farming land, in other words, it would not have been suitable for farming. Generally a links course will be near the sea, and therefore can be quite windy, there is usually a lot more contours than a parkland course, and are usually designed without as many trees. They usually play hard and fast and the grass in the summer can get burnt easily, which means it goes kind of brittle and faster. A parkland course usually has lush green grass with many trees, and is a lot flatter.
Links is sand based and usually near the sea. It is hilly with deep bunkers.
On the first tee box, honors used to be determined by flipping a tee and seeing where it pointed after landing to select golfing order. This would have to be done at least 3 times in a foursome. Today, there's a new device called the Starter Coin that golfers flip once to decide who tees off 1st, 2nd, 3rd and last all in one flip.
