Iolanda Balas of Romania set a world record on September 21, 1959 of 1.84 meters. Balas held the world record for almost 13 years, first setting the record on June 7, 1958 at 1.74 meters and breaking it many times. Her best jump, and final world record, was 1.91 meters in July of 1961. That world record lasted for 10 years. The current women's world record is 2.09 meters set in 1987 by Stefka Kostadinova of Bulgaria.
