For example, Joe Louis was one of the most famous boxers to have emerged during this time. He was black and received a lot of hate and criticism but he ended up becoming a symbol of America in general and democracy. When he fought the German Schmeling, it was as if the US was fighting Hitler and the Nazis. He also made white Americans accept that Blacks were Americans and challenge racial stereotypes. He defeated Hitler's myths about superiority and many blacks placed faith, hope, and liberation on him.
