The Bismark ( A battle ship) made acurate shots from A distance of about 12 miles back in the 40's

Acctually is was the US battle ship North Carolina or Washington during a night battle with the Japanese Navy in WWII. The distance was 28,000 yards. The longest sniper shot with a kill was made by a Canadian Sniper in Afganastan. He was using a bolt action .50 caliber rifle (12.7 mm) and scored a hit on a taliban fighter at distance of about 2600 meters. His first and second rounds missed but he conected on the third round and killed the insurgent.

Before that the record was held by Carlos Hathcock a marine sniper in Vietnam. He scored a kill at 2500 meters using a M2 .50 caliber machine gun he made to shoot single shots. During his time in Vietnam he had a total of 93 confirmed kills, and over 200 probables.
