It depends on talent level:
Amateur: about three strokes (often right from tee-off! If you lose it!)
Intermediate: you'll lose about three balls!
Pro: Perhaps one per game will get lost.
BUT, as to life expectancy of a typical ball... Play each game with a new ball. It's fresh, it will do what it says on the box. There is NO SUCH THING as a 'lucky ball'. Each ball will deteriorate each time it's struck. Dependent upon the type/ brand, and how often you play, it can last about a year (if used seasonally = once per week)
If you are playing competition, or for performance, you're much better off playing with fresh balls each time. It's expensive, but you're only as good as your swing, and you're swinging at the BALL. Far too many people spend too much money on wonderful clubs, then are misers on balls! You're game will improve with rubbish clubs and fresh balls each time!
I played a 79 with clubs from the 1950s and news balls...!
Every ball type/ brand is different. Check the manf. specs. for their life-expectancy ratings.
accordong to "Bridgestone" and "Titleist" web sites, 5 years is reasonable under "NORMAL" storage conditions.
