The official or referee is in place to make calls relative to serves being served beyond the short line and not long, nor three walls before bouncing. They also watch for encroachment on the serve as well as screen serves. The referee will make calls of side out or award points to the server. The referee will make hinder calls (determining penalty hinders versus replay hinders or court hinders) and otherwise attempt to keep the match and thereby the participants safe. If there is moisture on the floor, the ref may delay the match and provide a dry towel to rectify the situation. The ref is also the official score keeper during the match.

The roles and responsibilities of the officials are to officiate the game. The officials primarily judge whether the balls were hit in or out. The officials also must watch whether the players perform foot faults.
