5.0 seconds by Herb Washington in 1973. It was the official world indoor record at the time. Since all official world records, except for the mile and marathon, must be in meters, the mark is not listed any more. But it is still the
fastest legal time ever officially recognized. Note that world records must now
be recorded electronically. Washington's time would now "unofficially" convert to a 5.24. But his time may have really been a hand time 4.91, which would have converted up to 5.0, so his electronic time equivalent could be about
5.15 instead. Regardless, 5.0 is fast.

The fifiy yard dash has never been an event in the Olympic Games. The shortest running event in the Games is the 100 meter dash and the Olympic record, as of the 2008 Games, is 9.84 set by Donovan Bailey of Canada set in 1996.
