A 9 iron is shorter, and has a little more added loft to it, so you can hit the green and not go over. A 7 iron is a mid iron, and is a little longer, and the loft is less than a 9 iron so you can have a little more added distance than a 9.

They start at a 3 iron and go to a wedge, as a general rule, as you go down the set 3 iron to wedge the clubs get shorter and have more loft.

Taylormade R7 irons became available in 2004. Taylormade R9 irons were introduced in 2010. R9 irons allow one to hit the Golf ball much farther than the R7 iron.
