There's no real rule. There is a traditional standard that a hole from 260-475 yards should be a par 4. Less would be a 3, more would be a 5.

None of this is too traditional because the whole concept of par is relatively new.

There is no set minimum length for any hole in Golf. You will find however that a par 5 is usually more than 400 yards and rarely over around 650 yards. On some courses a par 4 may be longer than a par 5 on another course.

each standard 18 hole 72par course has 3 par 3 holes, 3 par 5 holes and the remaining 12 holes are par 4.
