A string is a series of either strikes or spares in a row. In order for it to be a string, there must be more that three in the game. Given that there are only ten frames, a string will add substantially to your score because of the additive nature of the scoring.
For instance, three spares will add much higher than three open frames because one spare will add the next count of pins in the next frame. A strike will add two counts of pins, so a string will make a cumulative score. This is how 300 is a perfect game.
