What is a dink in badminton?

A dink is where you act like you are going to do a spike, and then you lightly tap the ball over.

Either the setter or hitter can make a dink. If a teamate passes the ball too close to the net, the setter can either use her/his fist or hand to hit it over. Same thing with a hitter; if the ball is too close to the net or if the hitter can't get there in time, he/she can simply "carry" it over. This can be an advantage because it a short hit, and the other team may have to dive to get it. The opposing team may think that the hitter will spike it down, and a soft hit will cause them to panic.
