Amateur, college, and professional tennis players are ranked according to a point system which is based on the number of tournaments they play, which tournaments they play (i.e., different venues have different points associated with them), and how well they play in a given match. For professional tennis players, the ATP (men's tour) and WTA (women's tour) are the governing bodies for player rankings; refer to the links, below, for up-to-date professional player rankings (n.b., the websites may change if/when the sponsorships change).

Rank refers to a person's overall status in a certain section, state, nation, or even the world. Ranking is just the simple lineup of who is in what position basically classifying people in order of skill level. Seed on the other hand is a person's skill level in a tournament in comparison to the other players only in that tournament. For example if the 2, 10, 11,12,15, and 17 ranked players are playing in a tournament in a particular section and there are 6 seeds designated for the tournament, these 6 players would be the numbers 1,2,3,4,5, and 6 seeds(respectively) in the tournament. All the other players in the tournament will be unseeded.

There is a point system. Each tournament is weighted differently with more points at stake to earn at bigger tournaments like the Grand Slams (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open). The number of points you receive is based on how far you get in the tournament (i.e. if you lose in the first round you receive far fewer points than if you were to lose in the semifinals.) The system is based on a 52 week entry system which means that you carry your points with you for 52 weeks. This is why players are often "defending points". If you performed well at a tournament the previous year, you need to do equally as well to maintain the number of points you have.

love-15-30-40-game

first person to game wins

love means 0

you say your score before saying the other person

if you both have the same score, you say 'all' instead of saying the other persons score(15-all)

if you the score is 40-all you say deuce

if you win a point in deuce, you say 'ad in' and if you lose you say 'ad out'

if you win a point in 'ad in' you win the match, but if you lose you go back to 'deuce'

if you lose a point in 'ad out' you lose the match, but if you win you go back to 'deuce'

winning a match will change the set score

the set score goes love-1-2-3-4-5-6-game

calling the set score is the same as calling the match score

if you and your opponent get to 5-all, you must play another 2 matches (this results in 5-7 or 7-5 depending on who wins)

if the score becomes 6-all instead of 5-7 or 7-5 you must play either a 7 point tiebreaker or and 10 point tiebreaker if you are playing doubles

tiebreakers are complex in the way they are played, but the scoring is love-1-2-3-4-5-6-7 in a 7 point tiebreaker

you have to win by at least 2 in a tiebreaker (7-2, 7-5, 9-7 for example)

most people (including highschool matches) wont play tiebreakers, but will decide matches by first to win by to sets (8-6 for example in set score)

hope that wasn't too confusing
