Well, unfortunately a lot of damage can be done. People have lost teeth and even eyes when they have been hit with a Golf ball. Someone could easily be knocked unconscious, but the majority of body shots will cause a lot of pain and a huge bruise. If you are the one who struck the golf ball you are responsible, regardless if you shouted 'fore' or not, you can actually be taken to court, and if you do not have insurance you will have to pay.
Stand behind them several metres away if you are in the same group, or watch out for a ball if you are a spectator. Any decent golfer is courteous enough to let the group ahead of them finish the hole before shooting balls in their direction.
