A good idea is a large headed high lofted (10.5 degrees plus) and a regular flex shaft. There may be a temptation to get a 9.5 stiff and try and hit it as far as you can, but the first driver i suggested will pay dividends in the long term. The driver is a hard club to hit for beginners due to it's low loft and long shaft.

From the 3-4 hybrid down to wedges I feel are excellent and durable beginner club set. I do believe the Driver and Fairway woods (3 and 5) over sized heads flex are not condusive for a beginner or high handicapp golfer.
A beginner needs a good pair of golf shoes and suitable clothing to comply with the course dress code. One also needs golf balls and a set of golf clubs although they can probably be hired until one is more confident they want to keep playing.
