First off you need the right clothes. You can't just try your best in skate shoes and jeans. You need comforatable shorts or light pants and some running shoes. Second train. I'm in 6th grade and I won the 440, longjump, 880, 100,and 220 every time I tried. I also got 6:09 in the mile and my trick was train. I did track AND cross country so that might've helped to. Again I know I sound like a broken record but TRAIN!
