The Ryder Cup began in 1927, and originally was a competition between United States teams and teams from Great Britain and Ireland. Following World War II, the US teams began dominating the competition so much that the games were hardly even competitive. Therefore, in 1979, representatives decided to expand the competition to include teams from continental Europe. Since this time, Ryder Cup matches have been much more competitive.
