Great question. On an actual Golf ball, there is no mark what so ever which indicates how many pieces there are in the balls' construction. You should check the box, or manufacturers website to make sure. Price is a good indicator, as cheap balls tend to be two piece. If you want, go to a concrete road or a slab on your patio etc, and throw the ball down, a two piece will have a hard clean ping sound whereas a three or four piece will have a soft dull thud.
A wound golf ball has rubber band type material wrapped around a ball something like a small superball before the cover is put on. A 3-piece ball is made up of solid pieces . . . one small inner ball a larger piece covering the small ball and then the cover.
A two piece golf ball has only two parts. The core and the outer cover. These balls tend to be firmer and have a lower spin rate than a three or four piece golf ball.

Golf ball's cores are made out of peach cores and the mantle of the golf ball is made of metal string <silly> A golf ball starts out as a latex-filled rubber ball for a core that is progressively wound with a thin rubber strip. After the core is completely wrapped in rubber and is the appropriate diameter, it is placed into an injection mold and a polymer covering with dimples is added.
You can use a range ball on the golf course, but they are usually low quality two piece balls and not very good, and it may be frowned upon by your playing partners.
