Serving in badminton is opposite from the form used in tennis. To serve, hold the bird in one hand and hold the racket below it. Then drop the birdie and hit the center of the rubber tip with an underhand motion.
In badminton, it is not legal to hit the shuttlecock (birdie) after it has bounced on the ground. The game requires players to strike the shuttlecock before it touches the ground, and doing so results in a loss of the rally. Therefore, once the shuttlecock has bounced, the point is considered over.
In badminton, the birdie can be hit only once on each side before it must be returned to the opponent. This means that a player or team can hit the birdie only once before it crosses the net to the other side. If the birdie is hit more than once on one side, it results in a fault, and the opposing side is awarded the point.
