There are several factors that go into building a table. The first thing you need to do is decide what kind of table you are building. There are a lot of basic plans out on the internet. the second thing you need to do is look at your tools and make sure you have what is needed. If you don't, this will raise the price (most of the time by a lot because of the tools that you would not normally use, like a lathe) Third, you need to decide what kind of wood you want it made out of. Oak is usually the most expensive and maple is one of the least. Maple is a nice wood too so do not shy away from it. Wood should be reasonable right now but might be cheaper in a month due to weather and less demand. If you choose a medium priced wood and already have the tools, with a nice but not excessive plan, maybe a 100-200. It could be higher depending on the wood prices in your area. Check everything out before you start your project.

To build a great looking table but either don't have the tools or are looking for an inexpensive way to construct one, check your local salvage yards for an old solid wood door. Many older doors will be made from either oak, cherry, walnut, or other fine wood. You can also find legs from old tables or purchase turned columns from your local home improvement stores. Sand the old door and apply the stain (or paint) of your choice. If you are painting the table, I recommend you use either pine or poplar. Poplar has less grain than pine and takes paint really well. If you opt to build the table from scratch and are using hardwoods like oak, maple, walnut, or cherry, you can easily spend $200 or more on the wood alone depending on the size of the table. That doesn't include sandpaper, stains, and poly.

Depends if you want it to be a regulation size. The most expensive part would be getting a special size of plywood. The surface of a ping pong table is 9' X 5'. A standard piece of plywood is 8' X 4'. Using very basic materials and simple design, you should be able to build an 8' X 4' table for about $60. To make a regulation sized table it would cost about $125. You would be more cost effective to buy a table than to make one.
