Massage therapist (we do not like being called masseuses) are their own bosses in a lot of cases, so, they set their own earning goals. If you live in NYC or its surrounding areas you can expect to earn $40,000 to $100,000 a year.

The going price for the last 30 years seems to be $60 for an hour for any modality of massage, or a dollar a minute. Most massage therapists are independent contractors, so you can make your own rates to what you think you are worth. Some people would like to increase their pay and deter clients from a lower rate so they may mark their menu something like this:

  • $40 per 1/2 Hour
  • $60 per 1 Hour
  • $85 per 1.5 Hours
It can make a client think away from the half hour and go with a full hour, because they can get a full hour for "less."

Also, it depends on where you are doing your massages. If you are solely on your own, you will pocket 100% of your money. If you are working for a company, you will pay between 40-60% (rent, possibly advertising fees, possibly linen fees, possibly credit card machine fees, etc). If you are working in a clinic, it's typically considered unethical to accept a gratuity, whilst working in a day spa, it's okay to accept a gratuity. Gratuities range from $5 to $20.
