The leaders of professional cycling teams make millions. Lance Armstrong made several million dollars in salary alone in his prime and millions more in endorsements. In fact, it is customary for the winner of the Tour de France to give all his prize money ($3-400,000) to the rest of his nine member team in recognition of their invaluable teamwork and help in winning the Tour. What some people don't realize is how much of a team sport professional cycling is, especially at the elite levels like the Tour de France. Even lesser riders, called domestiques, can earn a decent living in the professional ranks.
It will obviously vary depending on the rider. Lance Armstrong had a contract for over $2 million in 1996, before he had even starting winning the Tour de France.
The Avererage salary for a domestic rider (a rider who is not a Team Leader) is currently $30-40K but during a seasons wins and bonuses can bring this closer to $100K. As stated for a Top cyclist the money can be huge with salary and endorsments
It is speculated that the winner of the tour de France can expect to earn a million dollars plus the following season from endorsments and interviews etc.
