I began coaching gymnastics when I was 13 at minimum wage. Some places pay really good (Texas is a good place) and others pay very little. Less than $20,000 a year. On average between minimum wage and $9 an hour.
Coaches who are young, inexperienced in coaching, and at the recreational level make very little, possibly even minimum wage. Where I coach, they start at $8/hr. Team coaches are often also program directors, and make significantly more, but also do a lot more work, and the booster club usually pays for their travel to meets and workshops. It really depends on how well-established the gym is, how good the coach is, responsibilities involved, and the geographic location.
I work at a local gymnastics place in the town I live in and I typically make $66 a week and work 9 hours a week. It's a small gym though, so it really just depends on what your employer wants to pay you. If you were to judge you state league, you would make $10 an hour unless you were a USAG judge, who make more depending on what level(s) they are certified to judge.

Almost all coaches at the youth age are volunteers. Coaches that make money are high school's, junior's, and a few top Canadian and American AAA hockey programs.
Not even close as the major sports like basketball, football,soccer... Most of gymnasts work/train something else along with gymnastics
