First, you must have a formal education in agronomy, turfgrass management. Next years of experience are needed to be able to handle managing the entire Golf course (many different types of turf varieties, and their problems such as diseases, insects, and weeds that grow within their environment.) on top of this all the trees and shubs as well, not to mention dealing with mother nature. This career is often considered by the ill-informed to be "landscaping", mowing the turf is just one of the many aspects of this job and even this is very involved and takes a great deal of knowledge. As a superintendent you are responsible for an entire crew as well. You must be able to motivate people to work hard long hours for little compensation. You also would have to be able to understand, create, and follow a budget. Depending on the type of golf facility this can range from 250,000 to well over a million. whatever the budget a superintedent most often earns up to ten percent, and at a course 250,000 to 400,000 probably earns about 40k. This career requires a great deal of hard work, experience, and intelligence. Less than 15 percent of supers are compensated with six figures or more. For budgets of 400K and up, the Superintendent is usually paid 10% of the budget. 700k budget, paid 70k, 1.2 million budget, 120K and so forth. Average work hours for a Superintendent range from 55 - 80 hours per week. A Certified Golf Course Superintendent averages 85k per year. There are only 1600 Certified Superintendents in the world.
