It takes several hours on two days. Each event must be separated by a half hour of rest. While a 100m race might take only a few seconds, it takes several heats to let all the athletes in a large competition run their race. Half an hour then start doing long jump attempts for the entire field and so on. The longest time event is the pole vault because it takes so much time to give each athlete all of the necessary attempts, but each athlete is only on the runway (or in the ring) for a short period of time during these events. The longest continuous event is the 1500m which could take as little as 4 minutes, but for some decathletes (a good thrower, for example, might not be built for an endurance race) it is a much longer ordeal.
