Sport is defined by answer.com as "an activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively." Track and Field is based on the fundamentals of competitive basic human functions. Meaning, nearly every event in Track and Field represents a basic human ability: Sprinting, Running, Jumping, Throwing, and so on. the rules and regulations are there to ensure the competition is fair and so the documented results can be compared to other meets based under the same rules and regulations. Team scoring is calculated using a point system assigned for finishing placements in each event. So in a large meet with several teams the guy who wins the 100 meter dash brought in 10 points for his team where as two teammates from another team who finished second and third in the 100 meter dash brought in 8 and 6 points for a total of 14 points for their team. So the sport caters to skill and roster depth. It's possible to have a member of your team win every event in the meet and still lose the meet if another team collects more points with second third fourth and sometimes fith and sixth place finishes. (depending on how many registered teams are in the meet).
