Technology has changed the way Golf is played drastically with manufacturers using new metals not known to golf manufacturers of long ago. It has changed the way golf looks, too. In a game that demands function blend as seamlessly as possible with style, the looks sported by players have evolved from formal and elegant into freer and brasher designs for performance. Still, the spirit of golf attire has remained businesslike, from the three-piece suits of Tommy Armour to the sleek, Burberry-styled outfits of Adam Scott.

In many ways. The shaft has gone from wood to metal to graphite or other composite materials that make the shaft more durable and flexible so that it delivers more power to the ball. The grips have changed from leather strips that was simply wrapped aroung the top of the shaft to rubberized grips that improve the ability to hold the club, especially in wet conditions. The club heads have gotten larger to allow a bigger area to strike the ball. The so-called "woods" are now being made of hollowed metal to last longer and hit the ball harder. They are also being made in huge oversized heads. The heads of the irons have gone from being simple flat blades ones where the weight is more centered or distributed around the perimeter of the club. Centering the weight allows a more of the mass of the club to hit the ball to drive it farther. Distributing the weight around the perimeter makes it easier to keep the ball on target. Plus now the irons are numbered instead of named. No more mashie, mashie niblick, niblick, spoon, etc. And with all these improvements you would think I could finally break 100 on a regular basis.

The differences between golf today and say 50 years ago are vast. The game has really taken off with the arrival of Tiger Woods increasing the popularity of the game, as well as golf being shown to world wide audiences thanks to the television coverage which didn't exist for many many years. The clubs are also better and the balls are a lot better, which has forced the golf courses to get a lot longer. Golf used to be a sport for old men in terrible clothes, but now it is a cool popular sport for young people, some with some very bright clothes.
