In club competition it is either who has the lowest nett score (gross score- handicap) or gross score if it is a scratch competition. If it is a stableford competition the winner is who has the most points.
In pro Golf it is nearly always stroke play and whoever has the lowest total score after usually 4 rounds is the winner.
If it is a match, matchplay is used, whoever has won more aggregate holes than there is left is the winner.
To win a tennis match you must win two sets. To win a set you must win a total of 6 games, but you must be ahead by two games, for example if the score is 6-5, the set is not complete. If the score gets to 5-5 you need to play to 7. If the score gets to be 6-6 you need to play a tie-breaker. A tie breaker is a "super-game", where you play to a total of 7 points, but you must once again win by two points. Tie-breakers may go on forever until someone is ahead by two points. To win a game you must win a total of 4 points. Instead of counting your points like 1, 2, 3, 4, it goes, 15, 30, 40, game. If the game score gets to 40-40 it is called duece. If the score is duece, and the server wins the point the score is ad-in. If the server loses the point at duece the score is ad-out. To win the game you must win the point when it is your ad. Instead of 0, in tennis it is called love.
In matchplay the score is kept on an up and down basis. Whoever has the lowest score on each hole wins the hole. If a player wins the first hole they are one up, if they halve the second they remain one up, if they lose the third they are all square, if they lose the fourth they are one down. The match continues like this until one player has aggregately won more hole than are remaining. Where a score of dormie is reached, that is e.g 3 up and 3 to play, that player cannot lose, they can now only win or draw the match.
