A triple jump is measured from the line (from which the jumper starts their jump) to the point closest to the line from where the jumper has landed, if the jumper lands but proceeds to fall backwards towards the line the jump will not measure from where their feet land but the point closest to the line where ANY part of their body has touched the sand. The jumper must continue forwards to depart the sand pit, not back towards the line or the jump will be measured from line to closest point the jumper has touched in the sand. Also, the jumper must begin their jump from in front of the line or on the line but if their foot goes over the line this will be cause for disqualification.
"hop, skip, and jump" is the term best used to describe how the event is 'played' or for a better term 'competed.'
The event is isolated to a long strip where the athlete is able to dash/sprint toward a 'pit' located at a far end of the strip. the strip, or 'lane', can be anything from a dirt surface to a rubberized surface.
It is common to find four easily identified marks (refered to as the 'board') on the lane that indicate to the judge and athlete as a point from which to start the triple jump. This mark is used as a starting lacation from which a tape measurer will be used to calculate the distance the combined three jumps have traveled. It is very important that the athlete not initiate the first jump after this marker or it will be a 'fault' and the distance will not be measured.
The pit is loose, fine sand that both absorbs the impact of the jumping athlete as well as leaves a defined crater in the sand to be accurately marked to with a tape measurer.
The triple jump is three continuous jumps back to back. Your able to jump off either your left or right foot but than must be next foot that makes contact with the ground must be the same foot use to jump off with for the second jump and finally alternated to the other foot for the final jump into the pit. So it would be Right-Right-Left or Left-Left-Right. You can only make contact with one foot on the ground at a time to be considered a jump. The "Hop, Skip, and Jump" describes how the three jumps look and feel.
though it is NOT required to run up to the board prior to starting your triple jump it is the momentum of the inhertia your body gathers from the dash that produce the greatest distances between each jump, though is gather the risk of missing your mark via starting the jump too early, cutting off the distance of the jump prior to the board or jumping too late resulting in "no mark"; or "fault".
This event allows three attempts as a preliminary round for the athlete to achieve their best distance. In larger meets with athlete's can qualify for more attempts in semi-finals and final rounds where each round would allow three addition attempts each consisting of three jumps. The athlete that accumulates the greatest distance with the three jumps in any single attempt while staying in regulations will win the event.
