You should return a back spin with top spin, and a top spin with back spin.

If you try to combat the other person's backspin with backspin of your own, then you run the risk of not putting enough backspin on the ball, and therefore the shot may go long.

Much better to continue the spin which your opponent has put on the ball, and make his/her back spin work for you. Your opponent's backspin is essentially your topspin, so your opponent is already helping you out.

You also need to understand that, when your opponent puts backspin on the ball, the ball will not go very far after it bounces on your side of the table. Thus, you need to move forward a bit to get to it.

Also, you should usually wait until the opponent's shot bounces up to its highest point before hitting the ball back to him/her. This might mean backing up and waiting for the ball to reach that point. You want to hit it when his/her shot is hovering in the air, not when it just hit the table. This will maximize your ability to control the return.

Only advanced players should combat topspin with topspin, or backspin with backspin. This is much more difficult and requires a great deal of skill.

It is very easy to spin the Golf ball if you have the correct equipment. You will need u grooves and possibly milled faces on your clubs, although u grooves will be banned for amateur use in 2024. You will also need a high quality golf ball, like a Titleist Pro V 1 or something similar.

To get spin you need to hit down on the ball, feel like you are mashing it into the ground, when you do so the grooves slide over the ball resulting in spin on the greens. Make sure your grooves are very clean, because if they are not clean you will not get any spin.

There are however some limitations, if you are using a distance ball and not a spin ball you will not get any spin, and if the greens are hard, it is unlikely you will get much spin. You will not get as much spin as you see on tv, this is because the greens on tv are soft and very very fast, they are also quite slopey which makes it appear the pros can spin it 20 feet or more. Also because the pros get such a pure strike this is how they get more spin.

The previous answer said open the clubface, this is the biggest lot of rubbish I have ever heard, if you stand square to the target and open the clubface you will slice the ball, and even if you open your stance and clubface you will just hit it higher- therefore it will stop, but not spin back that much.

To give a ball any kind of spin, strike away the center of the golf ball. it will give it a back spin. any strike to a ball that is not through the center of gravity will give it a spin or moment as well as a push or impulse so to speak through the center of gravity, which is good because it means the shot is still predictable.

for backspin: strike directly below the center

for forward spin: above the center

sidespin or curve: beside the center

all of this requires really knowing where the club head will be and a very good picture in your mind of the center of the ball, also practice will help you understand the combination of distance from the balls center and the force applied.

Remember, the most predictable swing will never touch the ball more than once. If you are very skilled you might be able to follow through with the ball but you must be very careful because you have to keep adjusting the direction until you no longer touch the ball. The follow through they all speak of early on in golf is more of a entraining idea, getting you body used to that range of motion and not holding you back from going full force.

To get spin when you hit the ball, here are a few tips. Make sure you have clean grooves as you need a crisp strike, you will also need to hit down on the ball to compress it. But the easiest way to get lots of spin, a good wedge (Titleist spin milled) and a good ball (pro v 1)

Other good wedges are available, but look for ones with deep grooves and a spin milled face. Other good balls are also available, but ideally one which is high spin.
