First of all, if you are a beginner, or mid- high handicapper, you shouldn't worry too much about getting a good fit, off the shelf clubs will be perfect, unless you are overly short or tall. But if you want to get clubs custom fit, there are a few online guides which tell you how to get good measurements which you can compare against charts, such as the Ping color code system. Once you get the measurements, some online retailers will offer free customization on most sets of irons, but then again, others won't.
The best thing to do, is go to a golf shop or your pro shop, get professionally custom fit, most likely using a launch monitor and lie board, this will give you perfect readings, and they will get you any club you want, built to your specs.
There are a couple of things to note, if you are a junior golfer, or are buying for a junior golfer, they may quickly grow out of the clubs which is clearly of no use. Also if you try to custom fit the clubs yourself you cannot try different grips, grip thicknesses or determine what flex you need in shaft, let alone which shaft is best for you.
