Arthur Ashe was the first black male tennis champion. His victories inspired America and the rest of the world. He also established programs in inner city playgrounds that trained and developed new tennis stars from the minority community. Two products of the program are Venus and Serena Williams.

Ashe was one of the first (the first?) black man (person) to play professional tennis, making many racist whites feel awkard and uneasy. He "paved the way" for other black players to be treated as players and not as "black players", which is both good and bad. Good that they are able to compete as equals with whites, and bad that the whole racist problem exists. People are people, and arthur ashe was a damned good tennis player (no qualifiers as to his race, or color needed).
