Any professional golfer, or any amateur with a USGA men's handicap index of 1.4 or lower, can attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open. Many golfers are exempt from sectional qualifying, or exempt from local qualifying but not from sectional. Most of the exemptions are based on such things as performance in other majors, performance in other USGA championships, standing on the money list or world Golf rankings, and so on. Assuming you don't qualify for an exemption, then you'll have to take part in a local qualifier.

There are only a few different ways that you can qualify for the U.S. Open Championship. Entries are open to professionals and Amateurs with a 1.4 index or better. This index number has changed over the years as golf has become more popular and has attracted players with enormous talent. There are two qualifiers total to obtain a playing ticket to the Open. The Local (18 holes), and the sectional (36 holes). Simply put, you must be one of the low scores in local qualifying to advance to sectional qualifying, and you must be one of the low scores in sectional qualifying to advance to the Open Championship. The number of players taken at each qualifier depends on the field size and talent of those players. Some players (most of them pga tour players) are exempt from qualifying for local or local and sectional. There is a long and distinguished list on the usga.org website entry form for all the exemptions. For example; The past ten winners of the championship are exempt from both local and sectional. Note: If you fail to turn in a score within 10 strokes of the course rating, whether a professional or amateur, the usga may flag your name and send you a letter denying you any future entries. Bottom line is you must be very skilled at the game just to even try and qualify. Hope this helps, -Brian
