To earn points in tennis one person serves the ball in the service box and the opponent hits back to the server until either the server misses it, the tennis ball goes out of bounds (the person who hit the ball out would lose the point), or if a player touches the net the other player gets the point. The score goes love, 15,30,40 game. At 40-40 it's called deuce and you have to win 2 points in a row to win the game you need 6 games to win a set unless it's tied at 6-6 then you play a tiebreaker to 7 and you win by 2 and every 6 points played you switch sides. People usually play 2 out of 3 sets. Each game you switch on who was serving.

SINGLES:
It depends on the ground surface as to the best technique; it also depends on your stamina and natural inclination in terms of attack and defense in sport; it also depends, to a degree on your height, musculature, athleticism and the effectiveness of your serving.
If you have most of these in your favour:
eg The surface is fast - as in grass or PVC; you are able to mentally play 'a sustained attack', you are above average height and athleticism; and you possess a 'lethal' serve, you might well be better off going to the net as much as is feasibly possible - especially, when serving. The serve and volley game is very effective [you need to practise your volleying] if you learn to 'pick' the ball placed at your feet, and generally, you need to play it deep to the corners. Balls are usually aimed low over the net for this style. The last top exponent of this game was Pete Sampras.
If this style does not suit you, or the surface is slower and unsuitable, you may simply need to practise sustained, consistent groundstrokes from the back court, playing the ball wide and deep, moving your opponent from side to side to wear him down somewhat. Again, playing to the lines or to the corners is as effective as any ploy.
Even with this style, however, you need to be as adventurous as possible, as "fortune, truly does, favour the brave". You need to mix up your game: changes of depth, changes of direction, changes in spin and changes of ball pace. Keep them guessing.
DOUBLESYou win a point in several different ways. One is if you hit a serve that is untouched by your opponent. Another is if you hit a shot past your opponent and they don't return it. Another is if your opponent hits their shot out of bounds. You score 15 points for the first point you win, then another 15 for the second, then 10 more for the third, and finally 20 more for the game, which is usually just called "game." There are a minimum of 6 games in a set. The first player to reach six games, with a lead of 2 games, wins the set. In professional men's tennis, there are at least 3 sets in a match. The player who wins all 3 sets is the match winner. However, the match can go to 5 sets, if players alternate winning sets. In professional women's tennis, there are at least 2 sets in a match, or up to 3.
In tournaments like the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, or the US Open, a player (either man or woman) has to win seven matches in order to be called a champion.
You hit the ball, and the opponent side does misses it. You get points there. And you also get points if the opponent hits it and it is out of bounds on your side.
