When a sponsor of a PGA tournament pays the entry fee for a player
$400000
When an amateur wins a professional event, the organisers will give the prize money for 1st place to the 2nd placed competitor, and 2nd place prize money to 3rd placed and so on.
The name says it all. They provide money to the winner of each event as well as the others who made the "cut," and in return get advertising space/time.
Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Brandt Snedeker, Jason Dufner and Bubba Watson
PGA
well obviously if you are in last place, you don't make the cut! but if you made the cut and you are in last place, then you get about 1,000 dollars.
Players missing the cut and turning in a 36-hole score will be paid $2,500 each. Any player making the cut, but failing to submit a 72-hole score, will also be paid $2,500.The prize money for last place won't be confirmed until the 4th round has been concluded because it depends on whether the last players are tied for example. The full prize money breakdown for players that made the cut will be published here when the tournament is concludedhttp://www.golfandcourse.com/news/pga-championship-prize-money

I think when the players enter they have to pay a fee. So they use the money from the fees to derermine the prize money. They probally also have people that donate money and sponsers that give money.
