There are a number of reasons that drive shafts break. One reason drive shafts break is because of improper or no lubrication. Another way could be that the U-joint breaks or gets worn out.
The front axles are your "driveshafts" on ALL front wheel drive vehicles. Other wise there are no drive shafts.
Drive shafts are balanced to prevent vibration, if yours is doing it you need to check your universal joints, and whether the shaft has been dented or if one of the weights used to balance it has fallen off.

i don't think Honda CRVs are rear wheel drive...pretty sure there only front wheel drive and those use half shafts not drive-shafts.

NO it will not. The center shafts or different lengths. The center shafts in the 4-wheel drive transmissions are longer so the transfur case will fit onto it.
