The Royal & Ancient Golf Club was founded in 1754. The club set a number of standards for the game, including the 18 hole round. Since the 1700's, St. Andrews has been considered the ancestral home of the game.

I have heard that the 18 holes in Golf came from there being 18 shots in a fifth.

Hi there, the answer is that it was in Scotland. That's how long it took to finish a bottle of wiskey- 18 holes! But seriously, the 18 hole golf course was created in St. Andrews in Scotland around 1764. But this didn't become the standard until the 1900's!

but i dunno about you but it probably take me a wee bit longer than 18 holes to finish a bottle of glendullan!
