An undersea earthquake caused by the Earth's tectonic plates shifting. Many miles offshore of Thailand is what is known as a Subduction Zone, where one of the plates is slowly shifting underneath another one. When this happens, and the subducting plate makes an unexpected shift, it can have massive geographical disruptive consequences.

The plates are moving very slowly, but even if there is just a shift of a few inches, it can cause earthquakes, tidal waves and even volcanic eruptions.
