These were the first games in which international television participated significantly; the Games and the Media set the stage for the relatiionship among the games, media, huge amounts of money, the beginning of the end of the fiction of amateurism, and spectacles beyound the previous imagination of sedentary Man.
The 1944 Olympics (which was to be held in London, England) was canceled due to World War II. Because of the cancellation, London went on to host the 1948 Summer Olympics.
The 1944 Winter Olympics, which would have taken place in Italy, was likewise canceled.
WWII was big issue at the time. Majors wars usually interfere with international events back then because there was no U.N. until 1945.
