All major sports have a trade deadline which generally kicks in with about 1/3 of the season left to play.

An example of why there is a trade deadline would be if a rich team came down to the final week of the season tied with some other team for the wildcard spot. The rich team decides to make a deal with the Blue Jays, giving up several prospects and a boatload of money, to acquire Roy Halladay. Halladay comes in having not pitched in 4 days. This means he can start 2 games in the final week of the season. The rich team's playoff chances have improved dramatically.
