I'm not quite sure if you mean what country or where in that country. It's the U.S. National Anthem, so it's sung pretty much everywhere. Certain schools sing it everyday, and of course it is always sung at major sporting events, by different famous singer (Kristin Chenoweth, Jojo, etc...)
Cristiano Ronaldo played for Sporting CP before he was bought by Manchester United.
We sing it before big events because we are Americans and we want to celebrate the fact that there is no other nation like ours. Why do we smile when we're happy or shout when we're angry? Because that is how we express what we're feeling, its our reaction to whats going on around us or within us. We sing to wish each other good luck, in the hopes that the Fates smile upon us, our friends, and our family. We hope for the future to be safe and filled with happiness, after all, we sing to show strong emotion, and in the case of the Star Spangled Banner we sing the pride of our country for the whole world to hear.
January 4th, 1964. JoAnne Smith was the winner of the first televised woman's sporting event. It was ski jumping. She won by 20 meters. She is my great grandmother. I could be wrong, but I do believe that some ladies golf tournaments/challenges were televised before 1964. I remember watching the great Mickey Wright play against another woman golfer (I think it was Sandra Haynie) and think it was closer to 1962. Surreyfan
The legionary commander always took the omens before a battle. (They were somehow always good). Then the commander would give the men a "pep talk" telling them how good they were and how weak the enemy was. Individual soldiers may have had personal rituals they performed before assembly.
