  • According to the International Olympic Committee website, the Olympics are held every four years to respect the origins of the Ancient Olympics which were held every four years.
  • An Olympiad is four years in length and this is the length of time chosen to be between the Olympics in both the modern and ancient eras. Although an IOC-sanctioned event was held in 1906 (but the IOC do not widely regarded this event as an Olympics) and the idea to hold events in the gap between olympics was dropped).

because there are 4 gods in Greece

they use to celebrate

that is how Olympics was made

they use to celebrate the gods on separate years

but now they celebrate the gods together

so Olympics is every 4 years

The summer Olympics are held every 4 years, same with the winter, but they alternate, so that the summer Olympics is in 2000 and the winter Olympics is in 2002. Then that means the next summer Olympics is in 2004 and the next winter is in 2006.

The Olympics are held every four years because the Ancient Games held at Olympia in Greece, were held every four years. The time in between the Ancient Games was called the Olympiad and was used for dating historical events.

Beginning in 1896 , the Summer Games are held in years divisible by 4, while the corresponding Winter Games (begun in 1924 and numbered eight Olympiads lower) were later moved to the intervening even years, i.e. 2 years later. (There were Winter Olympics in both 1992 and 1994.)

The 2016 Summer Olympics are the 31st modern Summer games.

The 2018 Winter Olympics are the 23rd modern Winter games.

The Olympics have always been held on a four year cycle. It goes back to the ancient games and their original purpose. Originally, the games were a tribute to the Greek Gods. There were four of the gods that athletic competitions where held for, and the most important was the one for Zeus, the king of the Greek gods, held in Olympia.

There was one set of games each year. Poseidon was one of the others. So in Ancient Greece, there was one major athletic celebration each year, and the ones in Olympia were held every fourth year.

The Olympics are celebrated every four years because this is the length of the Olympiad, and Olympiad is a method of keeping time in the Ancient Greece. The Olympiad was used like a calendar but it lasted four years long as apposed to only one. The first Olympiad was used in 776 B.C., the same year the Olympics started. From then on many people in Ancient Greece referred to the years and days of the Olympiad as there way of saying the date. "They would say; I was born in the second year of the twenty-fourth Olympiad" (Carr 1).
