Players are simply not as skilled at the college level as they were in the past because the best players are long gone to the NBA. It takes time to learn an offensive system and power conference coaches do not have the time to develop their teams anymore. The 3 point line counter-intuitively hurts scoring because too many teams focus on shooting 3s and the shooting percentage is just not good enough because teams have learned how to defend the 3 point line. So we wind up with a lot of defensive struggles with less talented teams where underdogs try throwing up 3s to keep it close.

Was there ever a college basketball shutout?

Basketball shutouts are quite rare, but they do sometimes happen. These are virtually restricted to high school and amateur level. In the United States, high ranked schools are frequently seeded to play low-ranked schools, and the lopsidedness becomes quite clear. Mats Wermelin once scored all points in a 272-0 shutout in a high school game in Sweden on February 6, 1974. Also, a Michigan high school girls basketball team lost 61-0 to the third-ranked team in the state in 2004. Around the same time in the DC area, Eleanor Roosevelt (girls) beat Cardozo 108-0!

Is ice hockey a low scoring game?

It depends on what you compare it to. Other games played on a field with a net and goaltender, such as lacross, typically have higher scores than hockey, while hockey tends to typically have higher scores than football (soccer). The NHL has been averaging between 5.5 and 6 goals per game in the past few years. Comparatively, there were only 2.3 goals per match at South Africa 2010, which is played over 90 minutes, compared to only 60 minutes in hockey.
