Babe was an outstanding female athlete, excelling in track and golf, two sports open to women during her time. She was born in Port Arthur, Texas, in 1914 and was a high school All-American Basketball player in 1930. In 1932 she entered the AAU National Track and Field tournament where she entered 8 of the ten events and won five of them. She won two gold medals in the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles. After that she turned professional and gave athletic exhibition througout the country. In 1935 she took up golf and became the leading female golfer in the country. In 1947 she won 17 straight golf titles including the British Women's Amateur (she had regained her amateur status by this time). Turning professional again, she dominated the Women's Golf Tour. In 1949, the Associated Press name Mildred (Babe) Didrikson Zahaias the outstanding woman athlete of the century. Othat than that she didn't do much.
