That usually comes when you become too old to perform at the level that generates the fan adulation/respect that you have become accustomed to receiving. In the case of Cal Ripken Jr., he probably could have played another season, but he really had nothing more to prove. He had set the Iron Man record for professional Baseball that may never be equalled -- a record just as secure as Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak. Nobody can be sure of the reason why any athlete retires because there are usually several motivators privy only to the athlete and his closest loved ones.
