36 - First given to Mel Queen (not the former Blue Jays coach) in 1942, this seemed reserved for bench players and back of the rotation guys for half a century. The great Johnny Mize was the most noteworthy of these. But in 1995, the Yankees traded a prospect named Marty Janzen to Toronto for David Cone. The hired gun found a home in the Bronx. He won more games for the Mets than he did for the Yankees - he won his Cy Young in Kansas City - he won his first World Series in Toronto. But he won several more rings in New York, pitched a perfect game, and will probably be best remembered as a Yankee.

In addition, I have a photograph (scanned 35mm slide from either the late 1960 or perhaps 1970-1971 showing the Yankee's first base coach wearing 36. It might be Ellie Howard or Hector Lopez but his back is facing us in the photo that I took at the Stadium.

Whitey Ford wore uniform number 16 for the New York Yankees from 1953 - 1967 and from 1968-1975 as a coach. Whitey Ford's number 16 was retired by the New York Yankees in 1974.

There were 15 Yankees that wore the number 16 before him including Ernie Nevel in 1950, Whitey's first year when he wore number 19. Ford did not play in 1951, and 1952

New York Yankees number 17The first Baseball team to use numbers on uniforms was the 1916 Cleveland Indians when they wore small numbers on the sleeves of their uniforms, as a way of identifying the players. This practice was short lived.

In 1929 the New York Yankees decided to wear numbers to the backs of their jerseys. The numbers corresponded to each player's general position in the lineup. For example Babe Ruth wore No. 3, since he usually batted third, and Lou Gehrig wore No. 4 as he batted fourth.

The late great Bobby Murcer wore number 17 as a rookie. See how many Yankee fans know that. Noted players include; Bobby Richardson, Gene Michael, Mick "The Quick" Rivers, Dwight Gooden, and Bucky bleepin Dent (coach) As he is known to Boston fans. A number of players have worn #15 for the New York Yankees. Perhaps the most famous of these players is the former captain, Thurman Munson who died tragically in a plane crash. He wore #15 from 1969-1979. The pitcher, Red Ruffing wore it in 1932-1942, and in 1946. Tommy Henrich wore #15 after the war. The number was also worn by Tom Tresh, Joe Collins in the second half of his career, and briefly by Charlie Keller in 1945.
