The main persons vying for power were Leon Trotsky and Joseph Stalin. There were others, such as Grigori Zinoviev and Nikolai Bukharin, but the first battle was between Trotsky and Stalin. Lenin favored Trotsky over Stalin, but Stalin was too entrenched in the Communist Party for Trotsky to win that struggle.

The main struggle for control was between Leon Trotsky and Joseph Stalin. However Grigory Zinoviev and Nikolai Bukharin were also high enough in the ruling party that they could also vie for control. Stalin allied himself with Zinoviev to oust Trotsky. Then allied himself with Bukharin to eliminate Zinoviev. By then Stalin was so entrenched in the party that he cut ties with Bukharin and simply assumed power in the absence of meaningful opposition.

Immediately after Lenin's death, the power struggle was between Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky, which Stalin won. After Trotsky was exiled, the power struggle continued only now it was among Stalin, Gregori Zinoviev and Nikolai Bukharin. Stalin also won those matches and assumed full power in 1929.

Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotski became the two main contestants to succeed Vladimir Lenin. Stalin bested Trotsky by allying himself with Grigori Zinoviev and Lev Kamenev. Trotsky was eventually expelled from the Communist Party and then from the country itself. In 1940, after Stalin became the dictator he is remembered as, he sent a Russian agent to Mexico City, Mexico, who murdered Trotsky

How do you handle a power struggle?

If the power struggle is between two other people, I stay out of it. If a power struggle started between me and another person, I'd try to find a way to compromise.
