Vladimir Lenin was the leader of the Bolsheviks during the "soviet revolution", although technically it is not called the soviet revolution, but the Russian Revolution or Bolshevik Revolution. The Soviet Union had not come into being until 1922.

Vladimir Lenin

Vladimir Lenin, as one of the most prominent leaders of the Bolshevik Party in October 1917 is the one who convinced the Bolshevik Party that the time for revolution had come. As the leading, but not sole, personality in the Bolshevik Party, he is considered the leader of the Bolshevik Revolution.

Leon Trotsky had just been released from prison and was Chairman of the Petrograd Soviet, the real political power in Petrograd. As Chairman, he mobilized the Petrograd Military Revolutionary Committee, which included the Red Guard and armed workers, soldiers and peasants, sending them to occupy key installations to paralyze the Provisional Government.

Yakov Sverdlov was a top organizer in the Military Revolutionary Committee and helped plan the actual operations of the revolution.

Vladimir Lenin was the leader of the Bolsheviks, but he was not the leader of the entire Russian Revolution. The Russian Revolution consisted of two revolutions, the February Revolution and the October Revolution. The February Revolution was a spontaneous mass demonstration and general strike by the people of Russia who were complaining about conditions in Russia under Tsar Nicholas II. Tsar Nicholas II abdicated the throne while Lenin was in Switzerland. Lenin had no part in it.

As to the October Revolution, Lenin organized and directed it as an armed insurrection by military forces put together by him and the Bolshevik party.
